The Bat
by Jeff LeMond
First year students settle in as campus grounds go dark.
The college dorm begins to swarm.
Police patrol the park.
Oblivious of horrid acts committed cross the way.
The bloodless lifeless neighbor girl,
As in her front yard she lay.
Police were working overtime to track the killer down.
Meanwhile, at the frat house, the party life redound.
This building stood three stories tall
and doors were always locked.
Surrounded by the campus grounds
and guarded round the clock.
Undoubtedly the safest place or so one might believe.
Locked up like a bank each night,
but sometimes looks deceive.
All precautions taken, what could be done was done.
No one knew each night at two
she takes her evening run.
No worries getting back inside she had her class I D.
A lap or two around the park and back in bed by three.
So cool and refreshing was the quiet late night air.
Her in ear headphones cancelled noise.
As music blocked despair.
She thought about the coming year and classes she might take.
So much life ahead of her,
the new friends she would make.
Perhaps she needs to get a job to help out with books and fees.
Her mom and dad are working hard so she can live at ease.
And as she ran she thought about her life and where she’s at.
And so distracted by such things,
she never saw the bat…
